Kexin Zhang - Margaret Zhang

Zhang Kexin, born in 1957, Harbin, China. In 1982, he graduated from the art department of Harbin’s Pedagogical University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. 1989, works as the editor of Heilongjiang’s Provincial Fine Art Publishing House. His paintings were shown at Chinese National Art Exhibitions during 1984 to 1989.

In 1992, Zhang took part as a visiting scholar in an exhibition of modern Chinese ink paintings organized by the Ministry of Culture of the former Soviet Union, took part in a symposium on contemporary Chinese culture held by the Research Institute of Eastern Countries of the Russian Academy of Science. Afterwards, he broke away from the governmental framework, and in 1992 he became a “nomadic artist”, pursuing his art career while travelling around the world. In the same year, he held a tour exhibition in national art museums of all Eastern Europe countries. In March, he was honoured by Moscow’s Bieliayevo Museum of Modern Art as a guest artist.

In 2002, invited by Indian and Nepalese Embassies, Zhang went to these two countries for an academic visit and communication on the subject of religious art. During the time, he wrote a lot of relevant theses about the Worshipping Red and carried on an experimental contemporary art practice in the following 3 years. Afterwards, he did some academic trips in countries like German, Holland, Belgium, France and Spain at their request, and held his solo exhibitions there.

Zhang is also the pioneer who devoted himself to, and has already accomplished, the establishment of an artistic link between China and the Southeast Asia. In 2011, he was one of the curators of the 4th Guangzhou Triennalle, the most important contemporary exhibition in China. In 2012, he was invited by Thailand’s Silpakorn University as a Visiting Professor.

During the past nearly two decades, Zhang’s public image has been established as an outstanding artist with a distinctive style. Not only does he carry out various forms of art like installation, performance, digital imagery, painting, sculpture and new media, he also performs as a contemporary art critic and curator. He has written a great number of academic articles for several well-known international art media and has been the curator of many seriously themed exhibitions in major galleries. Zhang has always been an active and influential figure on Chinese, Southeast Asian and international art stage. He now lives and works in his studios in Beijing and Bangkok.

In 2011, Zhang was one of curators at Guangzhou Triennale, where 2 Indonesian artists participated, they are Heri Dono and Indieguerillas. Since then Zhang was eager to visit Indonesia and Jogjakarta in particular. With his wife, Margaret, facilitated by Indieguerillas, Langgeng Art Foundation and JIRP, they had an independent residency on 1 – 30 September 2015. Apart from having ocular and get to know Jogja artists, Zhang had a presentation at IVAA and an exhibition at Langgeng Art Foundation.

Zhang, Kexin lahir tahun 1957 di Harbin, China. Pada tahun 1982, Zhang lulus dari jurusan seni di Universitas Pendidikan Harbin, kemudian di tahun 1989 bekerja sebagai editor di Penerbitan Seni Rupa Propinsi Heilongjiang. Karyanya telah mengikuti pameran senirupa nasional China selama tahun 1984 - 1989.

Pada tahun 1992, Zhang adalah salah satu curator di Guangzhou Triennale, dimana 2 seniman Indonesia berpartisipasi, Heri Dono dan Indieguerillas. Sejak itu Zhang ingin berkunjung ke Indonesia, khususnya Jogjakarta. Bersama Margaret, isterinya, difasilitasi oleh Indieguerillas dan Langgeng Art Foundation, mereka menjalani sebuah program residensi mandiri selama 1-30 September. Selain berkenalan dengan masyarakat seni Jogjakarta, Zhang melakukan presentasi di IVAA dan berpameran di Langgeng Art Foundation. melakukan kunjungan akademis dan memamerkan lukisan tinta China ke Rusia atas undangan Kementerian Kebudayaan Uni Soviet (pada kala itu), juga berpartisipasi dalam simposium budaya kontemporer China yang diadakan oleh Lembaga Riset Negara Timur dari Akademi Sains Rusia. Setelah itu dia melepaskan diri dari pekerjaannya untuk pemerintah (China), dan menjadi ‘seniman nomadik’, berkarya dan melakukan perjalanan di seluruh penjuru dunia. Pada tahun tersebut Zhang telah melakukan pameran keliling di berbagai museum seni rupa di berbagai negara Eropa Timur dan pada bulan Maret mendapat gelar tamu kehormatan dari Museum Seni Rupa Modern Bieliayevo di Moskow.

Pada tahun 2002, atas undangan kedutaan India dan Nepal, Zhang berkunjung dan membahas tema seni dan agama. Dia menulis banyak tesis yang relevan tentang ‘Beribadah Merah’ dan melakukan banyak praktik seni kontemporer eksperimental selama 3 tahun berikutnya . Setelah itu, ia banyak diundang untuk kunjungan akademik dan pameran tunggal ke Jerman, Belanda, Belgia, Perancis dan Spanyol.

Zhang adalah juga pelopor yang mengabdikan dirinya untuk pembentukan hubungan artistik antara Cina dan Asia Tenggara. Pada tahun 2011, dia adalah salah satu kurator pada Guangzhou Triennale ke-4, pameran kontemporer paling penting di Cina. Pada tahun 2012, ia diundang oleh Universitas Silpakorn Thailand sebagai Professor tamu.

Selama hampir dua dekade, Zhang telah dikenal sebagai seniman yang luar biasa dengan gaya yang khas. Tidak hanya berkarya dalam berbagai media seperti instalasi, performans, citraan digital, lukisan, patung dan media baru, dia juga kritikus seni kontemporer dan kurator. Ia telah menulis sejumlah besar artikel akademis untuk beberapa media seni internasional ternama dan telah menjadi kurator di banyak galeri terkemuka. Zhang adalah sosok yang aktif dan berpengaruh di Cina, Asia Tenggara dan panggung seni internasional. Dia tinggal dan bekerja di studionya, di Beijing dan Bangkok.
